2009-03-15 : NEW: GNOMO - LUDENS EP

Today we present you the first online publication by Cophosis Records, Belio’s netlabel! The mexican artist Gnomo has created a very special EP called Ludens for us. A nice trip through electronic soundscapes of idm and breakcore influences. More information and FREE download here!

Continue reading this interview with Joel Dávalos aka Gnomo and enjoy the music!!!

More

1) Could you explain where the name Gnomo comes from?
Gnomo is a nickname made by some people close to me during my adolescence. It arose from the comparison between my physical appearance (very small) and the mythological creatures, the gnomes.

2) What motivates you to create your music? What are you trying to express with it?
I like the idea of creating an audible moment that causes emotions: melancholic, tragic, reflective… inside those who receive and feel my music deeply. In every track I intend to create a metaphor of all the contrasts that can be found in everyday life in the big cities.

3) How is the electronic music scene in Mexico?
Tough question. The breakcore/idm/dubstep mexican scene is growing slowly. I find very good examples among the different collectives that exist here, but they are few and they don’t use to work together. I think it may also be reduced to this: if you have money, you can create a scene.

4) Lately you're exploring dubstep music with your project Mostep. Which music bands have surprised you lately?
I was surprised by the power and dynamism that some bands are able to put into the low frequencies. Bands like Ultrablack, Vex'd, Skream and Broken Note. On the other hand, Acrnym and Hrvatski have fascinated me, while I still listen to projects like Flashbulb and Wisp.

5) What about the changing music market, the crisis of traditional music formats like CDs and the booming online music or the return of vinyl?
I think the relationship established with a physical object, like a CD or vinyl, creates a cult-like relationship, an appreciation quite different than that for an mp3. However, the mp3 has fueled the spreading of underground music with very good consequences for independent producers and artists.

6) Something that you would like to add!
Come to Gnome! You will possibly find something that is inside you. I’m infinitely grateful to Javier IA and the Belio Magazine staff for making me part of Cophosis Records. Go!

2009-03-01 : JEN RAY NON STOP!

It’s more or less one year since we published the article of Jen Ray in our Belio 026: Party. And it’s great to check that she didn’t take a rest after her last show.

"JR Z 103"

The next March 20th, the artist will show a performance at Wentrup, Berlin to open her new solo exhibition. Actually, Jen Ray’s large scale drawing “Untitled” 2008 and her first film “Play Loud” are on view until March 7th in the group exhibition “Berlin-Paris” at Kamel Mennour, Paris. And last but not least she will be included in the group exhibition “Wonderland”, May 2nd – August 30th, 2009 at Kunsthal KAdE in Amersfoort, Netherlands with Hernan Bas, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Nathalie Djurberg, Marcel Dzama amongst others.

One of our favorite galleries (if not “the favorite”), Jonathan Levine is presenting these days the new works by the always incredible Mars-1. We featured him in our past issue Belio 024. But he still keeps surprising us with his amazing talent to show the unseen. If you don’t know about him already, check out the following pieces included in his new show “Nuclear Mystic”:

SAN, our first artist published in the Die Young Collection, presents an amazing show of new works. Under the name "Vitamina Euro" SAN developes one of his previous series of illustrations inspired by money. In his own words "Vitamina Euro is basically an irony about the nutrition of the modern human being, a real irony about the food that makes us grow and reproduce."

This exhibition can be visited in Sevilla at Montana Gallery (Doña María Coronel 32, Local - 41008 Sevilla). It will be open to the public until March 24, Monday to Friday from 11:00 to 14:15 and 17:00 to 20:15 h. Saturdays from 11:00 to 14:15 h. You still can get his book through our online store.

2009-02-24 : ARCO REPORT 3/3

The last chapter of this ARCO-report is dedicated to the mixture between art and graphic design. Since years there is big discussion about those artists who are in between both disciplines: art and design. And we appreciate that each year there is more illustration, more design and more graphics in the selection of art pieces that galleries show in that fair. So... if you are a graphic designer, ARCO is something really interesting for you too.

Ian Monroe

Here you can find supa-big illustrations like The Sistine Chapel drawn by Javier Arce, the typical negative reflections from Artists Anonymous, or the highly graphic inspared canvas of Thukral & Tagra... Of course there is much more to find in each ARCO edition. Personaly we always have so much fun there. And we always turn back to our daily work full of inspiration.

2009-02-23 : ARCO REPORT 2/3

For the second chapter of the ARCO report, we focus on those artists who are best known in the street culture. Both, american lowbrow art scene and street art have become some kind of hip since some years ago. So some galleries are including those artists in their walls. This kind of art was and is the main subject of our magazine since we started in 1999. And now we see this new step like a successful confirmation for this generation.

Javier Gutiérrez

Next year the guest "country" in ARCO is Los Angeles, so you can expect more lowbrow and street art coming to Madrid for the next edition... We will be waiting impatiently!!

ERIC WHITE

The Ascension

The Truth

Speaking of Eric White's work is to enter the artificial paradise of appearances. Combining irrational planes, manipulating colours and forms and through a multifaceted, creates a dream world where the fees are distorted. The harmony and beauty beat in duels with paranoia, nostalgia and horror. As out of Hollywood of the 40s, immersed in scenes that could well be a sort of cross between contemporary Hopper and Magritte, the characters are presented as spectra in mysterious environments, inducing a psychosis of the viewer. Its disturbing images we found in a metaphysical level, that which exists beyond perception. His works are a careful blend of surrealism and hyperrealism with a flawless paint bill to build their dreams dark.

Eric White is one of the most important artists of the pop surrealist movement, although their work is of a more un-informative. Born in Michigan in 1968, received her BFA at Rhode Island School of Design. After a decade living in California he moved to New York where he lives and works. He has exhibited in numerous galleries and museums internationally including The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Gracie Mansion in New York, La Luz de Jesus, Robert Berman and Track 16 at Los Angeles Fashion and Politics in Tokyo. His work has been shown in important exhibitions of contemporary art. Last fall, his work was also at Laguna Art Museum in Los Angeles.

His work is part of private collections of artists like Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Pacino, David Arquette and Courteney Cox.

Creative Neurosurgery

Because advertising, marketing and promotion dictate, before filming starts, the content and concept of the production that follows, such a humble thing as a movie poster can be an integral part of the film-making process. In fact, it's the major part, and the poster artist whose work you see in lobbies and newspapers has more to do with what you see on screen than the producer, director, or even the storyboarder. Gomez Bueno in his role as artist-auteur all but determines beforehand his film's eventual success or failure with the movie-going public. True cineastes, who pride themselves on knowing all there is to know about box office and budgeting, will sooner bend your ear with accounting figures (receipts both net and gross ) before they will choose to opine on subjects like mise en scene or cinematography. But they will tell you where the credit is due when the credits do roll-- and that is likely to be somewhere in the lobby, not on the screen.Except when he's taken an acting role.

Gomez realizes that most critiques of pop/pap consumerism show a regard for their subject which befits the slobbering enthusiasm of an adoring fan or a suckling brat: if they're not sucking and slurping they're burping and whining. Consumer sovereignty is our birthright. Pro Choice or Right to Life? Confusing, isn't it? Throw out the baby with the [ your brand here] bathwater? Or Pamper them before they're branded and born?

Gomez draws our attention to that product known around the world as quintessentially Californian. Even though Hollywood hates America yet represents California (Some would say you Californians hate America, too- Ed.); and the better "Hollywood" films are made in Poland or Serbia with Romanian crews....Known for taking on multiple identities in his conceptual work, including business entrepreneur, religious cult leader, classified ad seeker, politician, and surf n shop owner, Gomez morphs all these and more into his new role as Director/ Auteur. Perhaps as much influenced by his numerous recent cameo appearances onscreen as by his Hitchcockian turn behind the camera, Gomez plays tribute to 'the land where dreams are made" and to the landscape beyond.

If we have to talk about our city: Madrid. And the artists you can find in its streets, we can say that Madrid is living a really great moment. One of the best examples is the case of SpY. One of the weirdest artists in contemporary street scene. Since years Belio Magazine has been following his work. And now with our website, we don’t want to miss the chance to discover and spread his work. Even more because this week there will be the opening of his solo show at Studio Banana. So, if you are in town do not miss it!

From the 19th of February running through the 22nd March, at Studio Banana: C/ Plátano 14 Madrid. Spain.
Opening 19th at 20:00 h. (www.studiobanana.org/dnde-estamos)

Subtlety is not something that the current street art scene has us used to. On some occasions it comes off as intrusive as outdoor publicity, that inescapable machine whose existence is usually wielded as an argument to justify the presence of independent art in the street. But this isn’t the case with SpY. The participation of this man from Madrid doesn’t jump out at you. Rather, it waits until you run into it. It isn’t a monologue but a dialogue, between the artist and the environment, between the passer-by and the piece”.

SpY began to act in the street while he was still an adolescent in Madrid during the mid-eighties. By the beginning of the early nineties he had established himself as the leading figure of the still young state graffiti scene, offering works with an impeccable style and a solidity that even today are still not very common. Although this chapter closed a while back, SpY has not forgotten his roots. He is conscious that graffiti is a priceless, vital and artistic school and above all, an intensive and prolonged training in the exercise of observation and creative development of the urban environment”.

Around the mid-nineties SpY felt that he was outgrowing traditional graffiti as a means of expression. He soon began to play with the infinite possibilities that the surroundings offered his senses, recently freed from this narrow methodology. A maturation process began that has beared his best fruit throughout the current decade”.

His work involves taking over urban elements through transformation or replica, commentary on urban reality and the interference in their communicative codes. The bulk of his production comes from observing the city and an appreciation of its components, not as inert elements but as a palette of materials overflowing with possibilities. The will of the game, the careful attention to the context of each piece and a constructive, not invasive, attitude characterize, without a doubt, his performance”.

Like the best examples of public art, the participation of SpY forms a whole with its context. It is in the fusion of these two elements, as well as in the chance encounter between the spectator and work, where the core of his proposal is found. For this reason, this man from Madrid does not produce work for exhibition in galleries and limits himself to exposing graphic documentation, which takes the form of very cared-for, large-sized photographs”.

SpY’s pieces want to be a parenthesis in the automated inertia of the urbanite. They are pinches of intention that are hidden in a corner for those who want to let themselves be surprised. Filled with equal parts of irony and positive humor, they appear to make the passer-by smile, incite reflexion, and to favor an enlightened conscience”.

Ilia of Btoy
To gaze at a piece by Ilia is to enter into a magical universe populated by acid-house warriors and chic lost souls. Set against stark retro landscapes, the artist’s muted palette and delicate lines enhance the turbulence captured within their striking, moody faces. Ilia is one half of Barcelona duo Btoy. For years, Btoy have been adding life to the influential Catalan street art scene, and more recently into a grimy tunnel at the first Cans Festival in London.

A preview reception for the exhibition will be held on Thursday, February 5th, 2009 from 700pm – 10.00pm. The exhibition will be open for viewing through Thursday, February 26th ’09 from 1.00pm – 7.00pm.

2009-02-02 : CTM'09 PHOTO REPORT

Clubtransmediale is over for this year... The last 10 days left us remembrances of good live acts, great nights at Maria Club (Berlin) and some interesting discoveries. That’s the most important: To feel full when you discover at least something you have never seen or listen before. Then the whole event is perfect... Perfect? Well! Maybe that’s not the word. Perfection is just impossible, we would have to add a wish list to the line-up. Maybe for the next year... For the moment enjoy the photo-report we have done for you:
